Ok so I changed the gas, checked the oil, plugged in the battery, put in the key and was about to give it a test start.

Nothing.

I checked the engine run switch and nothing happend. a few idiot lights came on but other than that when I pushed the start button on it nothing happend.

What do I need to do?

I began working down the line. went the the stator (oops) then to the starter. I wasn't able to test the starter but I did test the "Voltage regulator/rectifier" and testing one way it worked all things tested at 8 and the other way like my clymer manual says it didn't give any readings.

What I'm wondering is if its messed up.

If so is there another way to try and start this bike?

I'm going to be getting up at 7:00 a.m. (7-3-07) to begin working. I'll check in every now and again till I have to go to work at 2:00 p.m.

I'm really excited about this project.

You can jump the starter solenoid with a screwdriver between the 2 big posts on it. Be real careful though and do not hit the frame, just the 2 posts. Or go down to an auto parts store and pick up a remote starter button (probably the best idea in your case). It will throw a spark or 2 using the screwdriver or the screwdriver will get stuck. Have the key on so the engine can start. The start button contacts are probably corroded if it has sat for a long while.

ok. I pulled the starter and tested it. It works. I put the starter back and tried to start it. It seemed like the starter wasn't touching the engines gears.

I'm going to pull it all apart tonight and again get up early and start working on it and I may just pull everything apart. WAY down and make sure everything is set right and works right.

Update:

I finally got it to start turning over but with no luck of it starting. It feels like one of the pistons are jammed. Like I can use a wrench on it and it works with great effort but then I try the starter and it seems like it stops on the piston and when i move it past I hear like a wet sound from it. I'm going to pull my spark plugs and give it a go.

I need more feed-back!

I have joined other forums but I am waiting on being approved. It's been a month.

Pull the plugs and turn it over. You may have a cylinder full of gasoline. if not put a little bit of oil down the plug holes and let it soak awhile then turn it over. There may be some rust in there. Either way if it's been sitting a long time, pull the carbs and give them a good cleaning.

I agree with the last guy on here but in addition to putting a little oil in the cylinders put about a tablespoon of brake fluid in each cyl also just be careful not to let it get on the paint. I would also change the oil before going out on this bike if this proves to be needed. Also this may be a dumb question but have you checked to see if you have a kickstand saftey switch?
