I have a 1972 CB500 Four with a bad engine. Will the engine from a 1971 CB500 drop in? I read somewhere that the 71 has different electrical connectors and exhaust than the 72 and later, but I cannot confirm if there would really be a problem. Would a 500 or even a 550 from 73 to 77 fit in the 1972 frame? Thanks for any help.

I would say yes on the 71 engine fittin' in the 72 frame. You can change the electrical stuff over, I'm positive it wouldn't be hurt. Still a points ingnition either way.The exaust should fit if not go aftermarket because they are made to fit a braod range of the same type of bike through different years.
I would say no on the 550 in the frame. Usually the frames are made for one certain engine and they don't use a universal "block". Like how a 350 Chevy can go where a 305, 307, 262, 400 and so on was because the blocks are the same dimentions extenally where they bolt on to the rest of the car but anything is possible with a little work and engineering.

Yea, I don't think It will be a problem. Check out the specs in your manual if you have one just to give you a better idea.

Maybe this will solve your problem? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1972-Honda-CB-500-Motor_W0QQitemZ140214895349QQcmdZViewItem?hash=ite m140214895349
By the way, if you decide to scrap the project, I will be in N.Ga next week (easter) and would be interested in the bike for parts.
