I'm new to ATV riding and I haven't been wearing a helmet when I ride but I notice a lot of other riders use them. It makes me wonder why...I mean we've got four wheels I never ride in such a way that I could roll over or crash into a tree so what's the deal on helmets? Is it something experienced riders wear?

I've been on 4 wheelers now since the mid 90's and I wear a helmet. They can be rolled goin' slow if you hit a rut the wrong way. Another thing to look at is low hangin' branches. Most poker runs, all that I know of, and state trails it's a rule.

I rolled a riding mower once, I'm betting an ATV is even easier.

It is real easy like on the side of a hill or goin' into deep ruts. We just had an accident here where a guy was loading/unloading one on to a truck and it must have flipped and landed on him. They called in the Lifeflight helicopter.

I know someone that was in a coma for nearly a year because he wasn't wearing a helmet. He was just riding the display quads out front of his shop in for the night. No racing or anything like that. Just hit the curb the wrong way. The guy will never be the same again.

Its pretty easy for an ATV to roll on top of you, plus you could easily bash your head on a rock when you go down.
Also, a helmet (assuming its a fullface) protects your face from getting pelted with roost.

My wife will attest to that. You can't follow the Raptor without gettin' pelted.

I used to own a YFZ 450 that I MX raced and later I owned a YZ 250F that I also raced, so dealing with roost is nothing new to me.
Lemmie just say that being behind a 450 MX bike coming out of a soft, loamy corner sucks!!!

Yeah I wouldn't ride without a helmet, also make sure you replace them after you have a major crash

Should you wear a helmet? Well I think it depends on the ATV, if you got a lil’ crazy looking Raptor, then you should! But if you riding the kind of ATV with the roof and thick plastic windshield, then I don’t think you should. I use the kind with the roof/windshield at work and my best advice is to wear that seatbelt!!! Me and my friend flipped it going full speed. It was fun, but reckless. We where on a muddy road and following the road tracks when he lost control. He decided to accelerate through the chain link fence next to us to “go through” it. LoL, we ended riding it up then flipping! I had my seatbelt, he didn’t thus causing him to bruise his forehead badly and rolled on top of me, he was in shock for a couple of minutes. I’m underwater (the muddy road was full of water) and almost drowned on 4 inches of muddy water cuz the guy was passed out and on top of me, plus he’s about 300 pounds and about 6’8’’. Cool story, huh? Also, make sure to keep your eyes open during any kind of accident, it helps you react faster. I mean it.

Would you wear a helmet if you were tooling around in this ultimate Polaris ATV??? It has roof, doors, seatbelts, rollbars, and best of all....a dump bed.241

Polaris? Hm...I think that's the kind of ATV we use at work! Not the ULTIMATE version, but a lil' green one. If it was up to me, I don't think I would wear a helmet on this red ultimate Polaris. But that's just me, if you want to wear one then wear one. I'm not against it :)

I would wear a helmet while driving that. I'm too dumb to know it isn't a sport model that could take jumps :D

One thing Maico, if you ever wanted to ride a state forest trail you have to wear a helmet. Nearest ATV trail to you would be Michaux State Forest. The nearest state dirt bike trail is about 5 miles from you I believe.

Ask Green Bay's Brett Favre about not wearing helmets on 4 wheelers. It's a good idea, the life you save may be your best friends.

I have a Polaris Sportsman 500 and sometimes treat it like a sport quad (not smart I know) but if I know im going to be going fast and/or doing crazy turns or anything I put my helmet on. If im going hunting and just driving to my stand obviously a helmet is out of the question.
