Yammer hammers? neat moniker! I have been referring to my bike as a Yamahopper!

I inherited my Dad's '82 Maxim 750 :D

Nice bike too! ( As if I have anything to compare to) :p

I just ticked it over to 20K original miles! Needless to say - it was parked more then ridden when in Dad's possession.

I use it now as my dedicated hoof trimming vehicle as long as I don't have to drive down too long of a dirt road!

Cheers! Kim

Well, as this IS after all a 'Yammie' Thread: :D The one Yamaha I've owned in the past was a 1982 XJ650 Seca 'Turbo'. I didn't have the scoot long, but while I did it was a blast to ride (when the onboard Computer Ignition Processor wasn't acting up! ). I'm uncertain but I think this bike came out just before Honda's CX500 Turbo version, which would of made it the first 'mass-produced' Turbo Charged Street Bike out there?! The bike definitely had back then what was known as the infamous ‘Turbo-Lag’: unless you were ‘on the boil’ already, you’d twist the throttle – then wait for what seemed like a minute (but was probably a second) then SWOOSH! Power delivery was smooth and quiet – I always had visions of the early Star Trek movies with the Enterprise going into WARP Drive every time I rode this bike. :D Again, just another ride that came and went I WISH I could of hanged onto (somehow?) and socked away somewhere, to enjoy years (and years) later! Aw well…….

Hi Virg
Sadly, the 380 was damn near bullet proof but not stupid proof. I was out of town for a few months and had lent out the 380 to a buddy. As it turned out, he knew nothing about bikes. The 380, for those that didn't know was a 2 stroke with a seperate oil reservoir. My buddy filled the reservoir with 20w 40 oil, then for good measure dumped about a pint of 2 stroke oil into the gas tank. For some reason it seized. Go figure.
Now that would have been bad enough. He then tried to crank it over how I don't know and desroyed what was left of the engine.
I let him have the remains for proper burial.

Bought a 2007 vstar 650 with 2000 miles on it 2 weeks ago, first street legal bike and i love it. I had a blue YZ450 when i was in highschool but i let a buddy borrow it to ride trails and he destroyed it. That paid for my first semester of college. :D

Vstar 650 is a nice bike. I had a 2004 Vstar 650 Custom and loved it -- light and nimble. If it was about to fall over, I could almost recover it through just arm strength.

I traded my 650 for the 1300 Tourer -- great bike too. 168 lbs heavier than the 650 Custom (668lbs dry) but I'm lifting more weights and working on riding technique to compensate. I put on the Yamaha crash bars to help.

Dennis

12-29-2007, 04:09 PM
@Dennis, yeah i love the bike so far, i think it was a good choice for my first bike. Did you have the highway bars on the 650 or you have them on your new bike? Ive been thinking of putting them on my bike, i think there worth the investment, what does anybody else think?

Dennis in NH
12-29-2007, 06:23 PM
I just installed them on the new bike last night. I like the extra chrome and feel a little better about the added protection. I plan to pad them before doing some serious practice so that if I do drop, I won't scuff them. I'm also thinking of getting highway pegs.

I'm hoping to get a dry day tomorrow and put the bike on it's side (with some towels, carpet, etc.) to see just how much protection I get. Also, I'd like to practice picking up the bike.

One thing to keep in mind about the 650 is that if you drop it, you will most likely see a little spilled gas on the ground -- not sure why but mine did this when I dropped mine (it was quite a gentle drop so there was no jarring). If you see the gas, don't panic -- I rode the bike and it was fine. I guess just get a way from it and don't light a cig.

I started on a minibike with a Briggs and Stratton engine when I was 11 - does that count? It had two wheels and an engine. That was followed by a Kawasaki KZ125 while I was in my teens. Rode bikes belonging to my siblings over the years. Bought a 1977 Suzuki 650 and rode it for a number of years. I still own it but my dad rides it most of the time these days. Last year, 30 years after getting that minibike, I bought a 2007 Yamaha Virago 250, my first brand new bike ever and love it. Already have over 4000 miles on it!

I love the Virago 250 and don't miss the power. The fact that I get more than twice the mileage of the old Suzuki makes the Virago even better in my eyes. If I miss anything, it is the comfort of riding hundreds of miles at a time that the heavier bike seemed to have over the lighter one.

I still ride the 250 long distances and it is perfect for riding around the city. A larger bike is fine if you plan on doing a lot of touring. But I would stay with the 250 for cruising around. Besides, the lighter bikes are easier to control in my opinion.
