Hi,
I just picked up a Memphis Shades detachable windshield and was wondering if anyone has riden with a windshield. I have not, i just want it for when i'm on major interstates and have to travel 75 mph or so. Long rides on highways can kind of beat you up, then again i am getting older too.

I rode with a shield once. I didn't like it.

I've heard a few people say they don't like the shield,it's like having a piece of plywood or something on the front of your bike. I just took my out with the shield on and it was good on the highway but it will be off more than on my bike.

Yea...it's takes away the feeling of being "open". The wind in your face makes riding a bike fun. The only time I use a face shield on my bike is going through Florida,. Too many bugs

Mikejme,
Ya know I've been riding for 27 yrs and I have yet to purchase a windshield. I rode from here in Cent.Florida to our rally in Mississippi a few weeks ago(about 700 miles)and hit a few storms and bugs bigger than my.....well you know....and I still can't find it in me to get one. I don't know though I almost bought one last year on my ride to laconia,NH but just could'nt go through with it. I ride I-95 evey weekend 214 each way to west palm beach from Daytona area for our weekly meetings and I just can't do it for some reason. Hope you enjoy it and let me know how well you like it.....you could change my mind:D

Hi MFFM=4LIFE,
I don't think i'll be able to change your mind lol. If you can go 700 miles through Fla. and all then you will probably never be convinced, that is hard-core as those bugs down there are the size of Cessnas.

Down here we have a serious love bug problem. It's like midwest locusts:eek: .I take a road every day called SR-415 that's just swarming with'em and by the time I'm through it all, me and my bike look like we've just been peppered by kamakazi love bugs. If I could take another road? I would, but it's the only way I can go between my house and civilization.
I have never used a shield either.

My speedometer died on me the other day. I haven't had time to pull the dash off and see if it's a loose wire, but the turn signals don't cancel out anymore either. Anybody got any ideas?

00SOFTAIL,
The same thing happened to a friend of mine when we were caught in a bad storm. his speedometer, lights failed. when it was all said and done, the ground wire shorted and he blew a fuse. We were'nt too far from a store so I got some paper towels, dried it off and used aluminum foil to make the contact necessary to get his lights working again as this was late at night and he needed his head light. Now I'm not sure this is your problem and I do not recomend you do anything you're not sure of that can do harm to you or your Harley! Best of luck to you, though.

Thanks MFFM, pulled the dash off last night-everything looked ok- checked the fuses also, they're ok. Looks like I get to buy a new speedo.
Thanks for the helpful info MFFM.. Members helping members...very nice.

I realize that shields are taboo and everything, but recently I put a sportshield on my H-D 2003 FXST that I really like. It's called the Memphis Shades Del Rey. Small enough to be un-noticable, but stops the bugs and road kill from slopping up on that hard to clean triple tree/headlight area. Comes in like 6 different gradient colors and mounting hardware (sold seperately) is polished aluminum.
Check out www.denniskirk.com (http://www.denniskirk.com) and look in the windshield section. They are known for quick delivery!

I just recently purchased a shield and I like it for riding in the cold weather.
I've never used my Windshield while riding on my Road King in South Florida! I just don't like it...........:)

I like shields on my bikes but since I've had them since my 1954 Cushman what do I know. I now have two Harleys and they are on both. I ride to work and ride almost everyday. True, in the south they help when the bugs get bad, like just before dark and in the mornings and heck the love bugs are really only bad from April to October... I've been hit by small rocks in the hand at 70 MPH and one bird and do not want that, in the body, so I use them. The removeable ones are nice but I rarely take it off except to wash and polish.

I am not a HD man. But on the wife's Honda Shadow I had one problem with the windshield. I could not find a lightbar that would fit with the windshield. If you have or think you will ever want a lightbar, research now to see if it will fit you windshield/MC combination.
If you get a quick release shield which are common today, make sure you can get it on/off with the lightbar in place.

I rode a Honda Rebel today about 30 miles, one way, at 55 to 60 to service it for my daughter. She had her windshield off and I had forgotten what that was like.
I prefer a windshield for sure, as it makes the ride safer and more comfortable for me.

I don't have a windshield on my Sportster and I'm fairly comfortable riding at 75mph when I'm wearing a full face helmet.

I take mine off in the summer, and put it on in the winter. I like the feel of no windshield, but, if it's 25 degrees on my ride to work,....it's beter to have it on. It doesn't help my hands though.

I only use mine for the cold and also longer highway trips. Other than that, I really don't like it, makes the bike feel like a Geezer Glide.

Isn't there a joke like that about the perfect woman? Three feet tall, flat head, no teeth?

Maybe, but even toothless short chicks would rather not deal with all the bug guts...:p
The only issue with a lot of the windscreens...they're attached to the forks instead of a subframe. You have to fight every wind gust. Other than that, they are nice as far as lowering the fatigue factor on loooooooooooooooong rides, and dealing with construction debris thrown up by the errant cager doing cookies in the neighborhood construction zone.
Don't ask how I know about that last one...:o
