About 100 Miles south of Durango is the Bisti (or Bistahe in Navho) Wilderness area. The area is a "desolate" badlands with amazing and varied scenery.
Park at the Bisti Trading Post (ruins) and Baptist church.

A twenty minute walk (NNE) accross a scorched plain will bring you to the otherworldly rock formations.
Just when you think you have seen it all. The top of the next hill reveals a whole different planet of funky rocks and ravines.

For the rockthyologist, the valley floor is littered with petrified wood and amber. If you visit, please leave it there for others to ponder.

To get there travel south on State Highway 371 for approximately 33 miles and exiting left for 1.2 miles on a gravel road that will take you past the old Bisti Trading Post to an undeveloped parking area and access to the wilderness. There are signs. There are also more than one access road. Be sure you can see the trading post before you leave the highway on anything but a dual sport.
