View Full Version : Beware Darkside Chariots!!!

Darkside Chariots out of Gastonia NC....well not for long....they are currently packing up and moving to FL. Well I just wanted to warn people of these guys. They are conartists.......they are selling kitbikes and complete bikes without a dealers license. Very illegal. They also ask for your money in full up front before they would even start on the bike, then they go shopping....not for your parts but for themselves. They have sold several bikes over the last year and have yet to deliver the first one, not to mention even come close to finishing the first one. So if you have bought a bike from these guys you may want to contact your attorney.

Thanks for the headsup. You may want to report them to the USBBB and the FTC. Hope you didn't get burned too badly... :(

These guys might want to be cautious about ripping off bikers. Could create some bad karma...sooner or later a face from the past appears...even if it doesn't, all scores are eventually settled...Karma

Karma isn't something you want to mess with. It will eventually come back around to those guys. I just hate that their are innocent people out there that trusted these guys and gave them money up front.

Two of my friends and I brought bikes from Darkside Chariots Aug 06 with scheduled delivery date of 17 Jul 07. The guys from DS are driving up from Naples, FL to NC on 27 Jul so they can deliver all three bikes to us on Camp Lejeune, NC Marine Base. Once the bikes are delivered to us as contracted and promised, we will post our dealing with DS on here and post some photos of the bikes they build. I will keep you posted and updated on the events. I have been to their old shop in NC and I can say, no one else comes close to the style of bike they build, pure evil is what they are. Check them out

My question is where can you store 3 choppers on a Marine base? 'Least they would be safe.

The good thing is I have a place out in town as does one of the other Marines. But one of us does live on base and SHE (YES SHE, and she is having a HUGE 56 DEG OF RAKE, 9.5 FT long chopper being built) does not have a place to store it. Looks like it may end up at my place (as long as the key is there and I can ride it when I want).

Below web page/Info provided by Capt. Thanks Capt.
Just for the record, if anyone wants to check up on a builder to see if they are in fact a manufacturer registered with the gove, you can go to this government site and type in the builders name and bingo, see if they show up or not.
Just type in the name and see if they are ligit and rejestered.
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/manufacture/
Type in DARKSIDE CHARIOTS AND YOU WILL SEE THEY ARE GOOD TO GO AND REGISTERED

Capt. Well I am not going lie. When I went down to Naples, Fl to pick her up. I declined the ride. The chopper is a beast and I was intimidated by her. As soon as I got her home, I dropped her off at my friends shop here in Jacksonville, NC and he is adding the things I need to get her legal for NC. I am still waiting on my title. That should be in the mail today according to Mike of Darkside Chariots. Mike did ride her around the shop and street while i was there and the bike looked and sounded really good. I can't wait to get her legal. I am deploying again for two to three monthes next week. So the ride may have to wait until I get home.

You've got the patience of Job...You bought the bike back in August '06, just got delivery and it's not titled or street legal yet. I'm curious as to how much cash you've got tied up and what will the final figure be when it gets out of the shop? Extreme custom in State College keeps more than 40 Bourgets on stock just waiting for whatever custom paint job you want. I can't believe Darkside makes a better bike so they've gotta be a lot cheaper to justify the wait.

Well we deployed to the middle east for 6 months, so we (there are three of us that bought bikes) told Mike P and SPiKE of DSC to have our bikes ready in Aug/Sep when we got home from the middle east. They made good on the deal. It wasn't contracted for a year, I just didn't want the bike setting around collecting dust for a year and now I have an 07 vs an 06.

Yes but you still don't have a usable machine and the title is still in limbo and as a former notary I can tell you nightmare stories about that small detail. But what about the money?? Just how much have you had invested for the past year and how much more do you think it will cost to finish the bike?
I don't like to press for answers that may seem trivial to some but in any discussion about Darkside, the amount they charge would be relevent. I would hesitate to send money to a business that calls itself "Darkside" but understand that's typical theres a custom outfit 20 miles down the road that calls itself "Sinister" Customs.

I admire your honesty. I also find it ironic that you refer to your new bike as a Beast. That happens to be the name of one of my companies, Beast Custom Cycle. I think your gonna kick yourself if you don't at take your Beast out for at least one lil' putt before ya go even if you don't have title yet. Speaking of which, did someone at Darkside set you down and explain the new (Jan 06) federal laws regarding your "custom bike"? If not....I think your in for a real wake-up call. Check my post at this thread: http://www.motorcycleforum.com/showthread.php?p=433772#post433772
I doubt they are building an EPA inspected and approved bike. Just check your downtubes or under your seat for the required EPA approval sticker. Most shops can't afford to pay the EPA the required $10,000. per yr. + per. model annual fee not to mention the testing fees. They are however, allowed to build up to 24 non-EPA compliant bikes per year with restrictions on the new owner. That's you! Check it out.

Capt. I have to be honest about the bike. I am not used to riding long bikes (I grew up on the back of them with my father, but never the one taking the bike out). I ride crotch rockets and my fathers Harley's. This is all new to me. Our cops here in Jax, NC are pretty strict on things. If I were to get pulled over without a active title, vin, insurance, well they would impound my bike until I got it legal at 50.00 a day. I can't afford to take that chance right now. The title is in the mail along with a sticker (I hope this is the EPA sticker you speack of. I will have to ask Mike of DSC about that one). I really appreicate the info, and I will look into. I am really excited about my new bike, but getting ready for the Africa deployment is overpowering my time to think about things. I think she "The Beast" will have to wait :(

Bummer Shawn:( , Just another quick tip before you head out. As long as "The Beast" is being put to bed so to speak, don't forget to set her up for storage while your gone. Top off the tank and stabilize your fuel, drain the carb. after you fog the motor ( it's a spray pickling oil thats introduced thru the carb. while the engine runs at a high idle before shutting it down). you either procure it at your local motor pool or marine supply along with your fuel stabilizer. Pick yourself up a battery monitor/charger to keep it in top shape till your return. And...take lots of pics so you can show her off while your in the deepest / darkest (Africa). Not that your "to do list" isn't long enough already.

You know this was a response to a fellow who said he was ripped off. The dude (Gastonia) has never posted here since (wonder if he's a real person at all). You're saying they're great, that they build a stone chopper (though you haven't ridden one) That everything's on track (though they were to deliver three (3) choppers July 27) And though you have yet to have a usable bike from this company you're plugging their site and avoiding the question about how much bread you and your buddies have tied up in this (more than a year old) transaction....This thread is starting to look like it should actually be moved over to the choppers forum.

Yes. Of the 10 customers that signed contracts in 06 there is only two of us that have recieved our bikes. Both of our bikes have/had major welds break, forward control/kickstands fall off (one while riding the bike and mine while lifting off the kickstand). The others don't have much to show for thier stuff, just a bunch of delays and stories.

I know this is after the fact but when contracting to have a custom built always always always get in touch with former customers and if the builder hedges about giving customer references take your money and RUN! Look at their track record and reputation that will tell it all and if they don't have one find someone who does. Remember the old saying that it sounds too good to be true then it probably isn't. I hate it you guys got ripped. What goes around does go around and these guys are setting themselves for some heavy payback.

Well, well.....what goes around sure does come around and UNFORTUNATELY more innocent people are HURT and lied to because of a FAT piece of crap like MICHAEL JAMES PALETTA.
My wife and opened up the FIRST Darkside Choppers with Mike and he scammed us out of $25,000 in parts stolen from us in the end as well as cash. He scammed my father in law out of $40,000 to build and title in his name one of the bikes he now advertises on his site DARKSIDE CHARIOTS. Also, MY bike (also one of the advertisements on the site) that is now in pieces (he still has some of the pieces he has stolen with him now) and scattered I found in SC because MIKE AND SPIKE stole it when moving from GA to NC (have witness to all of the above, she was there).
I am sad to say I had anything to do with this piece of garbage and his GAY boyfriend and lover SPIKE. This man is total sham and his bikes are NOT up to any kind of specs.....he is a JOKE and everyone he has come in contact has sued him or hates him for all of the lies. So, I am sorry for all you people that got suckerd in by him and his "so-called" team. We were best friends, think how I feel knowing he screwed me the worst in the end as well as my wife and family.
Last, he has a wonderful EX in Gastonia that will tell you he is the devil, we love ya Nick !

Dear mr. paletta:
I do not appreciate and am not afraid of your attempt to black mail me into not posting information about your lies and theft on the clubchopper forum today, when you stated to me on the phone that you would send a letter to my wife with some make believe story (another paletta lie) about me having an affair with some office girl if I did not quit doing so.
Be advised, that I have reported your attempted black mail to both the Collier County Sheriff’s office and the Waukegan Police Dept.
you will also find that I have in fact continued to post on that forum including this letter.

PART 2
mr. paletta, you are a liar and a thief as is evidenced by all of the lies you’ve told to me over the past 18 months and including the lies you have written in your recent letter to me. And the fact that you have $13,800.00 of my money and have failed to and refused to provide me the product that I paid you for.
It has come to my attention that this is a common pattern with you (sometimes referred to as a modus operandi or M.O.) and that you have scammed numerous people out of their money by promising, accepting payment and never delivering the products for which you are paid.
Now it turns out that you are an attempted blackmailer too.
I received your letter dated 12/20/07 and I noticed that you neglected to list your attorney as having been copied on it.
Please provide me with your attorney’s name and contact information.
In the above referenced letter, you stated that you received my “undated letter”. Can you read or are you illiterate? If you look again at the letter, you will see that it was dated December 11, 2007.
you claim that you and your company “are not and have not been affiliated with DoctorSpike.com”.
Yet, it was DoctorSpike.com that listed the eBay item for a Darkside Chariots Phantom’s Chariot Kit Bike along with your phone number, which I called in my initial contact with you and up until you, changed that number in early 2007.
Further, I selected the ‘Buy It Now’ option for that listing after you and I spoke on the phone and thus contractually obligated myself to the deal that you and I made for you to provide me with a ‘Darkside Chariots- Phantom’s Chariots Custom Kit Bike’ in exchange for $13,800.00 (including shipping).
I sent you a check for that amount via U.S. mail.
In your letter, you also state that ‘I changed my mind numerous times regarding numerous issues on my bike which led to your changing the delivery dates numerous times’. That statement is in fact another of your many lies.
USMC_74

I challenge you to detail what changes I made to my order that would cause you to not send my bike to me for over 18 months after I paid you. And you still haven’t sent it! liar! thief!
you have sent to me a total of 8 parts in 18 months.
· 1 kickstand
· 1 headlight
· 1 rear wheel
Note: The rear wheel is a used 'mag' style wheel, not the new spoke wheel that I paid you for and has no matching front wheel as it is prototype and there is no match for it
· 1 rusty fender Blank
Note: I paid you for a Custom Darkside fender. Not a rusty blank that sat in the back of a truck and got rained on. The rust is not ‘surface rust’ as you claim, nor has the fender been custom cut or even have mounting holes or brackets.)
· 1 oil tank (interestingly, the tank is not rusted like the fender blank)
· 1 310mm rear tire
Note: (I ordered and paid for a 300m tire while Mr. Roach ordered a 310mm but you sent him a 300mm.)
· 1 DNA Springer front end
Note: Not the Custom Darkside Springer front end that I paid for. And it’s too short for a 54 degree raked frame which I paid you for and have yet to receive. Also note that my last letter to you was sent before I received the front end. Also, I called you to see what your intention was in response to my demand for a refund. Not to sing praises about the cheapest Springer front end on the market that you sent me instead of a Custom Springer front end that I paid you for
· 1 set of handgrips from Midwest Motorcycle supply part # 35-52 which are cheap store bought handgrips, not the custom grips that you were to make for me
mr. paletta, you might want to read our contract and the listing that you and DoctorSpike posted on eBay again.

What makes you think that I am not I am entitled to what I paid you for is beyond me. Are you delusional?
you have failed to deliver for over 18 months.
you were to deliver on the contract within 60 days of your receipt of my check and yet 18 months later I still don’t have my bike.
You have had plenty of time, far more than is reasonable, to build and send my bike to me.
you really should try to stop lying, stop trying to buy time and maybe even try to learn how to build a motorcycle along with something about running a business and dealing with customers.
Based on the shoddy design and workmanship of the two ‘complete’ bikes and three partially complete bikes that you have provided to other customers that I know of, your ability to construct a quality motorcycle that is safe to ride is questionable at best. Both of the bikes that you provided for Mr. Roach and Mr. Dixon have major structural deficiencies, so much so that Mr. Roach was seriously injured twice because of the poor workmanship you put into the deathtrap that you built for him.

PART 5
Mr. Dixon’s bike will require several thousand dollars worth of reengineering and modifications to fix your shoddy craftsmanship so as to make the bike operational, safe and to fix or add several structural components that he paid you for but you did not provide.
Then there are the incomplete bikes that you provide for Ms. Triplett and Mr. Klumpp, which apparently not only have several structural deficiencies, they are missing several thousand dollars in parts.
Because whatever bikes you do manage to build of shoddy workmanship and unsafe to ride or incomplete and unable to be ridden, I no longer want a bike built by you.
I fear that if you were to actually send me a bike, it would be a piece **** like the bikes you provided to those mentioned above.
mr. paletta, I want a full and immediate refund of my money plus 20% interest which I have been asking you for, for several months now.
mr. paletta, in your letter, you mention ‘getting more flies with honey than vinegar’. I acknowledge that you are probably as intimately familiar with this concept as you seem to be intimately familiar with vociferously iterating bovine excrement and it appears to me that your life consists mostly of that matter. You have gotten a lot of money from me based on your sugary lies and excrement laden promises and proclamations.
If your business has suffered, it is because of you and your inability to do anything that is right.
you can’t or won’t read
you can’t or won’t communicate factually
you can’t or won’t keep your word
you can’t or won’t deliver what you promise, contract for and receive money for
you can’t or won’t build a quality product
Don’t fault me for telling the truth about you and don’t attempt to blackmail me.
you want to blame everyone for your problems but take no responsibility for your own actions, inactions, lies and inabilities. I have to admit that you are smooth and convincing as you lie through your teeth and speak with a forked tongue.
After 18 months of waiting, you have failed to deliver on our contract.
Since July of 2006, you have made numerous promises to me and you have failed to keep any of them.
you have caused me to spend additional monies and caused me countless hours of loss of sleep, emotional and financial distress and damaged my credit and credibility.
In August 2007, you were so bold as to tell me that you would not be sending me my bike or a refund.
In December of 2007 you told me in your letter to not to contact you again.
you took my money under false pretenses with intent to defraud me of those monies.
mr. paletta, another of victim of yours told me that you are a shoemaker and not a bike builder. I don’t know it that is true or not but I do know that you are a liar and a thief and I doubt that you could make a pair of shoes any better than you can make motorcycles.
How and when I choose to attempt to communicate with you in continuance of my demands for you to refund my monies is up to me, as long as I can track you down.
Of course, I realize that you will continue to move and change your phone number without notifying me and/or not answer the phone or return my phone calls. All of which are indicators that are trying to avoid me and that you have no intention of providing to me what I paid you for. An intention that you have made even more clear to me by your declaration that I should not contact you again as you stated in your letter to me.
I want a full and immediate refund of my money plus 20% interest.
I’msure that you are thinking that no legal action will be taken against you because you have moved several times, hidden your assets, because you have done many similar rip-offs in the past with little or no consequences and because it is taking so long for you to be indicted and taken into custody.
I assure you that an investigation is in process, that this matter is not going to go away and it’s not going to wait for your convenience.
It’s my thought that everything is going to hit you all at once and soon.
Barring a full refund plus 20% interest, I will continue to pursue criminal and civil actions against you with state and federal authorities including the IRS and see you imprisoned for wire fraud, mail fraud and felony theft.
you can either refund my money or tell your lies to a judge.
If you choose to continue to live in denial, thinking that nothing will come of this and that you have gotten away with stealing my money, I encourage you to think again.
mr. paletta, if you want to avoid criminal action and a federal prison sentence (no parole) you need to quit lying and you need do the right thing and refund my money plus 20% interest.
In closing, let me reiterate that in my opinion, as evidenced by your words and actions, that you are in fact a liar and a thief.
But you have an opportunity to begin the process of changing your life and redefining what kind of man you are. To do so, you need to start now, before it’s too late. My advice to you is to bury your prideful arrogance, quit telling lies and do the right thing.
Refund my money plus 20% interest immediately and we can both get on with our lives and never contact each other gain.
Sincerely,
Keith E. Turner
P. S.
I choose not to capitalize your name or any references to you, so as to illustrate my extreme dislike and lack of respect for you, thief!

Oh yeah, I hear he has a little d--- and needs a MAN BRA !
If anyone wants more details, we have a lot more where this one came from......
Please register on www.clubchopper.com and post your info. This is the forum we are using now and getting the word out so noboby else gets the raw deal like all of us. There are at least 10 of us on there there that are victims of Mike Paletta and Jonathon Roseman.
Here is the link to our forom with photos of our bikes falling apart, welds breaking, etc....

Well Good newes and Bad News. Darkside Chariots is out of business, BUT Mike Paletta is still building bikes (One of my welds broke and the bike is being re-built by another builder, one of Mike Roach's welds broke, Mike Roach's bike caught fire and Mike Roach had to have his bike re-built after getting his from Mike Paletta, four other frames had bad welds have to be re-welded to ensure they do not break). Mike Paletta still words out of the same building but now accodring to Paul he owns the new business and Mike works for him. See below e-mail from a victim of Mike Paletta.

All,
I spoke with Paul Breehne who informed me that Darkside Chariots is out of business.
According to Paul, he has started a new company called Chariots of Kings and paletta is working for him as a fabricator.
Paul also told me that he is backing paletta financially to make things right with all of us and asked that we sit tight
And that paletta will call us on Monday 2-4-08.
The information we have been able to gather on Paul is that he is a business man in the Naples area who owns a string of Dry Cleaners and lives in the Naples area….Bonita Springs or Goldengate.
He is the owner of the Breehne Corp.
I am going to call Breehne again tomorrow and try to set it up so that we can all do a dial in conference call with him and paletta on Monday, 2-4-08.
Reply to this message with a time slot that would work for you and I’ll try to set it up at a time when everyone can dial in.

Does this type of thing go on quite often when people contract custom work over the Internet? And whats up with a stone bike? I think these guys would just be happy with their money or their customized bike, the sooner the better. If not, then if you did your business with them primarily through their website, I would contact the Internet Fraud Division of the federal government. I think it is called IC3 at IC3.gov. You can simply provide them a report online, and it will be investigated for Federal violations.
You might even want to forward a copy of your report to the bike shop with a nice little letter about how it would be better to resolve this before it goes any further.

I've been following this off and on for the past 2 yr.s. Since I have relocated my company down here in S.W. FL. I've decided to do a little research on this new evolution of DSC. According to FL. records, Chariots of Kings is filed as a fictitious biz name only under the company MP Enterprises of Collier Inc. which filed it's articles on 11/14/07. It lists the corp. agent as Mike Palleta. Mike is also listed as the Pres. and Paul Breehne Jr. as the Vice President. The last registered event filed with the state of FL. dept. of state was 09/26/08 for an Admin. Dissolution for anual report. It seems from this info that Mike techenically still calls the shots as Pres. and agent of the corp. that is pending dissolvency by the state for lack of it's anual corp. filing. I've got the last known address of this outfit which is about an hour south of me. I think I'll go down one of these days and see if this snake is still in business. If so, I'll let all the locals know what you have gone through so far. I'll post what I find out.
