silly choke question

I just picked up a 1972 cb350, and I can't figure out the choke lever... does "open" mean the air intake is open, ie normal running configuration, or does it mean that the motor is now open for business? Do I push it up or down to start it?

I'm glad this forum is here, because I'd sure feel dumb asking this question in person...

If it's the same as my CB750, I suspect it is, it's up for choke on and down for choke off.
