I am a newbie to the bike scene and I have been shopping for a bike, but after reading some of the post here I think I would be better off with a used bike. I was looking at the Honda rebel, but everyone says I won't like it after a month of riding. So my other choice was a suzuki s40 which I fell in love with. So I guess my question is should I start with a smaller bike and then upgrade or should I go with a 600cc bike and have it to ride for a longer time, also should I go with new or used?

My suggestion would be to buy something mid-ranged, 600cc if you're looking at a rocket. A buddy of mine has never ridden motorcycles before, so he took a class in which they provide 250's for you to ride. I agree, a 250 is too small to satisfy your thurst once you get the hang of it. Something mid-ranged will allow you to get a feel for a slightly heavier bike with more power over a 250 so you can become a more productive rider. My first bike ever to ride was an old 82 Suzuki 850G which weighed around 700lbs, and I had no problem. If you can pick the bike up at a stand still, and confidently manuever it, spend a lot of time with it slowly building up to highway time and you'll eventually grow to understand why a 250 is really just a learner bike.
Basically, if you want to buy something that you will like even next year after riding, go bigger than a 250, just not too big, like a Huyabusa! Then that's asking for trouble.
As far as new or used, with a new bike you have the advantage of a warranty, where is anything breaks, you have the comfort of taking it back to the dealer, and they should replace/fix it, that is if it were the manufacturer's fault. If you lay it over, don't expect them to show you sympathy. Used advantage is that you will find a mid-ranged bike cheaper used rather than new. You can probably pick up a Yamaha or Honda 600cc used for around 4-5k rather than pay the full 7-8k. Buy it, ride it for awhile and sell it when a bigger or better bike catches your eye. As long as bikes are kept in good condition and recieve the necessary tune ups, they hold value really well.
