Coping with loose gravel

They've recently started a little bit of road work in my area leaving LOTS of places with loose gravel, you know they come in spray that sticky tar, cover it with rocks and then run over it til it's flat then leave......and you're stuck with rocks pinging you in the helmet for a few weeks.

Any pointers on not making yourself look like a fool in the middle of an intersection?:confused::confused::confused:

Other than don't hammer the front brake,that's really embarrassing, not really. Just go slow if you know it's there.
