Riding down to Va Tech with a buddy and his soon-to-be-freshman son this weekend. Planning on making it a long ride by taking Lee Highway from Fairfax to Skyline Drive (29to Warrenton to 211). From Skyline, should be able to take the Blue Ridge Parkway almost the rest of the way to Blacksburg. I hear rt 56 is a fun road, so may try that too. Probably doing the return leg on Wednesday.

Should be beautiful weather, so I am really looking forward to it!

I live in Arlington and have friends out west. I'm asked all the time when I'm going to go, but no one I know has a bike. I gotta make the trip out there.

May do an impromptu trip straight out Route 50 and go all the way across West Virginia some August weekend. Probably 8-ish hours each way. I'll put up a message, if we do it, in case anyone is interested.

Lived there almost 30 -- years ago. Love to go jogging and bicycling in that area -- its so easy to get to the river or across to the city.

You will enjoy it! I went in early spring...not the prettiest time...but still very beautiful ride! I hope to head over there again and ride before the end of summer possibly! Have a safe ride!

My only concern is how often I'll need to go loooking for gas with my peanut tank.
2.2 gallons really sucks sometimes. I have to remember to get a new fuel bottle (just in case).

This should help you out...I would probably figure out how to carry a little bit in a saddlebag ...I don't think it is that safe...but neither is running out of gas ...

While you are in the area do the Back of the Dragon from Tazewell, VA to Marion, VA on Hwy 16 and let us know how it is.

From what I've heard it is like the Dragon but three times as long.

I am in Manassas and you are going to enjoy it. Take some time for the overlooks. You'll have some good conversations with other bikers taking a break.

Skyline Drive can be terrific - it can also be a few hours behind a series of campers doing 25mph. That's my memory of my trip.

Story does have a funny ending. Pulled into Front Royal to stay night. Guy I know who lived locally saw the old lady's and my bikes in the parking lot of motel and thought "What a coincidence. I know people with bikes just like those - and from Jersey too."

Blue ridge pkwy is amazing in autumn when leaves turn. If you find yourself near bristol and want some twisties, take 421 from the tn side to Mtn City. Enjoy!
