I once had stopped for two young does out in the country. I got out of the car and walked up to the edge of the road and knelt down, they both walked up to me and let me pet them, then one of them put it's head on my shoulder....I wished I would have had a pic of that...I will never forget that!

Deer jerky is the bomb. we had a friend that had a pet doe and they turned her loose and some hunter got freaked out cause it walked up and licked him in his ear while he was hunting / sleeping lol

Lol, I have a freezer full of venison jerky right now. My favorite is these jalapeno cheddar venison chop steaks that my processor makes. Also get venison fajitas, sausage, breakfast sausage, chorizo, hamburger and chili meat made. I only shot one deer last year unfortunately but I'm trying to make it last.

I shot two last November within maybe a minute of each other on my property which were my very first ever. Then January 1st this year I shot one while standing on the front deck. (a 35-40 yard shot with a shotgun, no scope or rear sight) I gave that one to the lady that delivers the mail here. BTW, all were head shots since I can't run with all the hardware in my back.

I did process the two deer I kept myself though I did the first part all wrong. I didn't gut the deer where it lay, just drug em over to where I could hang em up and did it there. And, instead of hanging them from their hind legs, I hung em up by their necks. Having never done it before, I didn't know how it should be done.

But dang they sure taste good! Maybe because I shot n skinned n gutted n processed them myself. :) Now all I need to do is learn how to process them like your processor does.

best way to do it if you dont field dress is cut a hole inbetween the ligament on the knee and run a pole through there and string em up lol i've seen it done the other way but its more messy. i skin my own cause im picky on how i want it done. if i take a life i want it done right lol no waste. i didnt get a chance to go last year so busy lol

I learned that AFTER I processed the deer. I didn't even have a knife with the gut hook either but at least I knew enough not to puncture the intestines. Now I have a rig to hang the deer properly and a good knife with the gut hook.

When I shoot my next deer, I intend to use it's guts as fertilizer for my gardens. If I knew how to grind up the bone fine enough where it would degrade, I would include that in the fertilizer too. I also intend to try my hand at tanning the skins so there will be very little waste. I figure since I do leather work, and sew, making outfits from the deer I shot would be right up my ally.

I learned a lot with those first deer, and I guess I have a lot more to learn if I'm going to do all those things. Thank god for the Internet! :D
