View Full Version : Fuel filter considerations. How to choose?

Hey all, I'm just trying to get an idea of the pro's and con's of different fuel filters.
I'm trying to find a decent but cheap inline for my '92 GSX1100F. Figured I would go with a VISU, but there are a lot of considerations... Can anyone advise on:
Micron Rating (I see everything from 10-250)
Filter Media (Stainless Steel, Sintered Porous Bronze, Polyester Overmold, Polymer Treated Paper)
Flow Rate (looks like options generally range from 4-30 gallons/hour)
Thanks!

You can estimate the flow rate: take your average miles per gallon, divide that into your average miles per hour, that gives you gallons per hour at that average speed. You should, at least, double that, to get the bare minimum. Four times that should meet your needs at even extreme conditions.
I don't think the media type matters much, unless you expect to leave it in a long time. More surface area in the media means greater service life, though.
A lower micron rating will plug faster, so you'd need greater surface area for a finer filter; I don't think you need 10 microns with carburetors, but it may help with FI systems.

Let me guess: You're an engineer, right ?? :)
I've probably put filters on 15 bikes in my riding career and always just walked into the dealership and bought whatever they had on the shelf.....as long as that wasn't a simple screen.
Most of the time it was a ceramic element; once paper.
I think you MIGHT be over-analyzing the situation. Maybe.

Guess I gave an engineer's answer, huh?;)

Ya I have a tendency to do that haha. I got a reply from Visu; apparently most of the filter elements are the same, although paper filters tend to be larger and more efficient.
