Well, I couldn't pass this deal up waiting for the insurance money to come in so I jumped on it. Just today my wife and I drove down to Kentucky and picked up my 2009 Ninja 650R. I only got to ride it the ninety-something miles home which was mostly freeway so I don't have a review yet. My first impressions are simply that this thing is quite a bit heavier feeling that my 250r, and quite a bit faster as well. Oh baby does this thing move!
As if you haven't seen this bike before, here are the obligatory new bike pics:

Awesome! And I absolutely love that screaming red color. Even though I love my Vstar that I've had for a year .... I've been hankering for an upgrade to something completely different. At least you had the whole theft thing to push you to do it! I don't know what excuses I'll be able to make...haha. All I know is that I want a trimph street triple so bad. All these new bike threads just make me want to make the switch more and more. We'll see what happens when the tax return comes in the spring....

Love her and she will love you back. I put a little over 16,000 miles on my 07 Ninja 650 and loved every minute of it. Synthetic oil at 3k made it a bit smoother...I think, LOL.
So, no one has asked yet and I'm OK with being the nosy one, so I'll just ask:
How much was it OTD? And is this used or did you talk the dealer into all those upgrades? I see a fender elim, sliders, etc...give us the story on your new baby! How many miles?

Well by the end of it my lips were chapped and my hands were numb but, it was an awesome ride.

Seriously. I rode to work this morning, starts up like a champ compared to the carbed 250r.
Awesome! And I absolutely love that screaming red color. At least you had the whole theft thing to push you to do it! All I know is that I want a trimph street triple so bad.
I used t be unsure about a red bike but... it's so loud I love it now! I just worry with my yellow jacket I look like a McDonald's employee! I also wanted a striple but they are way hard to come across at a price I'm willing to pay.
So, no one has asked yet and I'm OK with being the nosy one, so I'll just ask:

It's not nosy, I'd want to know the details myself!
Well here's my story... Pretty much every day I was checking listings for a deal on a bike. I went to a couple dealers and talked to them, emailed some people from craigslist, etc.. On Saturday I saw an 07 SV650 naked for $3k up in Columbus, so my buddy and I drove up there and checked it out. Well, it turns out the guy lied to me about the title being clear, it was salvage. That sealed the deal on that one and I walked, not worth opening that can of worms. Well as soon as I got home I got to looking again and found this 3 week old CL add for a used 650R, seemed like too good to be true but I followed through with it and bought it!
2009, obviously. 1700 miles, all the upgrades you've mentioned which upon closer inspection are totally professional jobs, I was impressed. All for..... $3500. Damn how could I pass that up.

Hey Thanks! You do?! I'll make that deal. Meet me at the District 1 Cincinnati Police Station and we can do all the paperwork there!
The avatar change is weird isn't it? You'll learn to like it
The weight of this bike is really noticeable in the turns. I could flick that 250 around like a wet noodle, but I'm almost having to do work to get this thing down in the corners. All a matter of time I guess. I'll build up the agility over the next however many miles and eventually will be used to it
cbdallas
10-04-2010, 01:57 PM
Yeah, the inertia is quite different between the two, not to mention how much more quickly the 650 will gain speed that has to be scrubbed off to make the next turn. It's also much harder to back into the garage uphill. :-)

internationalballer
10-04-2010, 02:42 PM
LOL Porange, you crack me up. As for theft security, maybe try a hand grenad hidden on the bike and if someone moves the handlebars it will pull the pin out and BOOM. LOL May want to check to make sure that wont void your insurance covereage and make sure you never forget its there. LOL Thise key fob alarms that go off if they detect movement I think seem like the best idea. Lo jack is junk because very few cities even use it and it only detects your bike if its in a certain range. Maybe you could go to the vet and see if they can put one of those GPS things they put in pets on your bike.

I like this live ordinance idea, I'll have to check with my insurance agent about that.. Hah!
Building on your vet idea, I'll take my cat to the vet, get a GPS in it, and then just strap my cat to the bike while I'm at work. It's a two headed defense: 1) Who wants to mess with an ill-tempered house cat? and 2) the obvious benefit of knowing where the bike is at all times. It's bulletproof
These are great suggestions guys, keep them coming! :icon_cool:

Find a wrecking yard that has a trashed-out, scratched-to-hell, broken set of fairings and put them on your bike. Nobody will want it then. :-)
After a while, you'll get really fast with changing fairings out, because you don't want to ride around all weekend on a turd-looking bike. Then change them back on Monday and start the cycle all over again. Foolproof and cheap!

I'm okay with the exhaust note for now, since I'm coming from the lawnmower-esque 250. They're R&G frame sliders, BTW. I have a question for you.. It seems that a very noticeable amount of heat comes from the right side and hits me in my right shin. I can't tell if it's coming from the exhaust or what, have you ever noticed this? It just strikes me as odd because it's so focused. I didn't really notice this in my jeans on my ride back from buying it, but I work slacks to work yesterday and really could feel it.

Solution: ATGATT!! What are you doing wearing slacks on a bike man?! Take a backpack and change when you get there! I never noticed the heat on mine, but then the 07's were styled different...
cbdallas
10-05-2010, 11:04 AM
porange, I think that 'burning sensation' is standard equipment on 2009+. There are several people complaining about it on the Kawasaki forum. My 07 never did it, but I think the fairing re-design has something to do with it. In any case, there's nothing wrong with your bike. Just an oversight at Kawasaki. You could probably fashion a heat shield, paint it flat black & fasten it under the fairing so you won't be a lambchop when you arrive at work.
Captainobvious
10-05-2010, 11:11 AM
I think thats just the heat off of the engine on that side. Its warmer over there on my ER6N too, but with your fairing added in, you probably get even more heat buildup there.
Thats a sweet, sweet bike at an even nicer price. Congrats Porange on a heck of a find. You're going to love the light steering and strong motor on this bike. I know you're coming from the even lighter 250, but give it a bit of time and you'll be thrilled. Its a terrific bike.
As for security, when I park in the city I use one of the disk clamps with the neon orange lanyards so the device has a visual deterrent as well. Hell, they roll up and see my bike and 3 others, they are probably going to go for the easier grab. Not to mention there are usually some cool dual sports, BMW's and a few other sports bikes floating around in the few areas I park. So I feel at least reasonably comfortable with parking there. You still never know whos going to walk by and decide they should have a sit on her though...
EDIT: I see cbdallas beat me to the response on the heat... :o
Captainobvious
10-05-2010, 11:14 AM
Oh also- the brakes have been complained about by many. Im going to try new pads and braided lines soon as that seems to be the way alot of people are going and getting very good results.
porange
10-05-2010, 12:10 PM
Thanks guys! I figured the heat just came with the territory but I wanted to be sure...
You got me Gilby.. I used to wear some leg guards but they kept coming apart and would get loose and slide around; they just became too much of a hassle. I wouldn't mind some overpants though, especially when it gets into the 30s and 40s, maybe I'll look out for a nice pair!
I thought about those disc clamps that make noise when you move them, but since my last bike was stolen in broad daylight anyway, is an annoying "car alarm" really going to do anything? IDK.. I like the idea of the pager to let me know.
Captainobvious
10-05-2010, 12:25 PM
Add the disc brake lock jobber too. Visual deterrent. Its only 35-40 bux and takes 20 seconds to put on/take off. Could mean the difference between your bike and the next guys. Its definitely worth it for that. It's not a noise maker, but it physically locks the disc (with a key)on the front wheel so it cant be rolled forward or backward. The neon orange lanyard is easy to see so a thief knows for sure that theres a security device of some sort there at the very least.
porange
10-05-2010, 12:28 PM
Well locking the steering and parking next to other bikes prevents someone from rolling it somewhere. My last bike I'm sure was just picked up, no rolling necessary.
I'm not saying they're not worth it, I'm just trying to determine if they would've prevented my last theft, and my guess is in that case, no

If you are going to leave it for that much time on a regular basis I would look into a disc lock with siren. If moved enough the siren will go off and those things are a B*** to remove without the key.

Same bike here... I've noticed that too. After a while it'll get pretty hot, and I have to swing my right leg out to cool it down. Probably because of the exhaust, but it seems to heat up all around that general area. I think it's pretty much normal for these bikes.
Nice on colder days... and you can move your hands down to warm them up if it's cold.

Its still a 4.1 gallon tank right? On my 07, I would get about 130 miles then the light would come on. When I filled up, I would have about 1 gallon in there. I averaged about 45 mpg or better though. I've gotten 55 out of it once...all highway, full tuck the entire time.

Red is fast but it could be faster. You need a NOS sticker on the windsheild and racing tripes on the tank, that should add some wicket HP. Maybe some red bull wings or monster energy stickers too.

Rolling through Benton Harbor you constantly see car's all decked out sitting on 24's looking stupid with skittles or Dr pepper on em. Why do people do that, is there someway to get these companies to sponsor you and give you money that I don't know about? I'll rock a big ass mountain dew sticker on a bike or truck if mountain dew wants to buy me the damn thing but other than that it just seems stupid.

The 650r has some great power. Its perfect for commuting. The right side gets warm for me, but it never gets hot. I always wear jeans when riding, and the right side gets warm after 30min. I think its just where the exhaust is located. Make sure to check if your bike has gotten its recall work done. Something about the rear brake being unsafe. I took mine to the dealer, and they did it for free. You can look in the Kawi specific section for the thread, but I took some pictures if you wanna see.

How many miles do you guys that ride 650s typically get per tank? I filled it up pretty close to the top on.. Monday, and ~100 miles later I only have 1 bar left, plus the E. Does that seem about right?
I'm currently getting around 140 miles per tank. Thats when its at 1 bar. But for some reason I only end up getting around 2.5 gallons of gas in it. I'm getting an average of 58mpg. I am stuck in traffic a lot though.

Yeah the guy I bought it from gave me all the paperwork from two dealer services and the recall, as well as all the aftermarket work that's been done..
I just got to 100 miles and my fuel warning came on, but then went away as I rode down the street. I filled up anyway and was only able to get a little over 3 gallons in it.
Another question: What do you guys have your spring preload set at? I went to check it last night and it was on position 5. The manual says for a 150lb rider it should be on 4. I only weigh 135lbs so I put it on 3. Does that sound about right or is that too soft and I should just put it on 4? I like to ride "spiritedly" but I do hit some fairly bumpy roads on the way home

Put it on whatever feels comfortable. When I got mine it was on the softest setting, and I'm 200 lbs. So, I quickly put it on 3 and then I think I ended up with it on 4. I only noticed a tiny difference. The amount it sagged when I sat on it was the most obvious difference...

I weigh 189lbs, and I have it set at position 5. It feels great for me. The manual says position 4 is for someone who's 150lbs i believe. So position 3 sounds right for you. It all depends on how you want it to feel. I like it to feel a little stiff, but I'm not over doing it.

On my way there now, I'll fix that problem. LOL
Was this where your bike was when it was stolen?
I'm kinda shocked the beamer doesn't scare theives away. That bike just looks like its waiting to attack someone.
Speaking of the beamer you're not the imposter, the upright beamer with wheel turned the wrong way is

Haha... thanks IB, I read this, scrolled up to see the picture and just started laughing out loud in my cube...
No this isn't where my 250 was stolen from. I'll take some pictures someday and show you guys where we park in downtown Cincy. I took some pics awhile back but they were just the bikes and not the surrounding area

Awesome bike! I think the she weighs in around 450lbs wet. I have the naked version. Handling a 250 vs a 650 is totally about the weight! Harder to snap those turns and braking is noticeably harder/heavier if you don't smooth out the stop. (at least for me). Does your 1st gear "CLUNK" from N as well?

Yeah it's definitely a surprising clunk from N to 1st, as opposed to the 250r.

Yeah, mine does the same, moreso than my FZR did.

That isn't a motorcycle, it's a guided missle with wheels. That thing looks fast just sitting still. Congrats!

Congrats on the new bike.....really like the red. Couldn't find a red one around here. Rather than looking further away, I pulled the trigger on a black 2009 just this Friday. These are really nice riding bikes.
