Vstar 1100 idles high in gear

Just purchased 2006 VStar 1100 classic. Idles high when in gear, warmed up. When put in neutral it idles back to normal. I have seen plenty of posts about this same problem, but no real solution. It cannot be carb related because it idles fine when in neutral, just not in gear, which I believe would also eliminate vacuum leaks. The previous owner stated that he just had the carbs rebuilt, a new gas tank, and new fuel lines because the bike sat for so long (only has 1050 miles on it). I'm thinking TPS or speed sensor. Any help ?

Try disconnecting the speed sensor at it's plug and see what happens when you go for a ride. The speedometer probably won't work but that might also effect your return to idle problem.

There is probably a voltage test you can do to the speed sensor shown in the shop manual but I don't work on those bikes so don't have one. Might check the local library.

Thanks for the info. It is in the shop right now and the mechanic says that the clamps for the carbs is lose and the seals and gaskets for the carbs are cracked and dry rotten. We will see if this fixes the problem. Of course some of the parts are on backorder.
