Frustrated....

I have an 05 ttr 230. Electric start only. Its my sons bike and he rode it this spring but we needed a new tire. He parked it and we got a new tire and went to get it and it wouldnt idle up. I got the tire swapped and cleaned the carb.... 3 times and still cant get it to rev. Checked the timing chain and cam and valves, all were good. My son was messing with it the other day and said he figured it out. If the starter button is pushed after the bike is running it will operate normally. Ive checked all wiring to see if theres any wires rubbing/shorting and nothing obvious. What am i missing? Is this something common?

The starter button pushed again makes no sense. In fact, I cannot think of a reason to even try that. All that would do is start grinding the teeth off.

So are you REALLY saying if you start it you cannot get it to rev up? Or it won't idle after starting? And in either case, if you push the starter button again it WILL idle and/or rev up? This makes no sense.

My first thought is you now have old fuel in the gas tank so no matter how many times you clean the carb you immediately are bringing back in old glumpy fuel.

I'd dump the old stuff and try new after yet another carb cleaning as well as add Seafoam. You may not be getting ALL the gummed up passages in the carb cleaned. Did you use an ultrasonic cleaner on it?

Maybe others will have other ideas but exactly what brand of bike is this. What you stated up front isn't ringing a bell. If it's a Chinese brand then anything is possible with the electronics.

Leave it to a kid to try something stupid like holding the starter button in.... idk what made him try it. It has new gas with sea foam in it. Its an 05 yamaha ttr 230. New plug, clean air filter. Ive eliminated everything i can think of. Im thinking its a voltage thing due to the starter drawing amps from the system but have no idea really....

And yes im really saying when i start it it will not rev. It sputters and backfires and will die if i give it a little gas. Hold the start button down and it runs fine.

Might be wise to ask in the Motorcycle Repair section rather than here. Not everyone looks at all forum sections. Especially the mechanic types.
