Lower a KLR 650

Has anyone lowered a KLR? I am looking at one but my heels still float a bit higher off the ground than I would care for when stopped. Just wondering how difficult/expensive a job it would be.

Lowering a bike can throw off the balance and steering capabilities the engineers designed it with...I'd just get a Versys instead. Same basic bike (OK, looks a BIT different, but not by much) and identical engine, but 1.8 inches lower seat height...

I know there's a price difference though, so thats something you'd have to think about. If youre buying used, the difference may shrink quite a bit though...

My key to happiness says "Kawasaki" on it.

You can lower the rear with lowering links and the front by sliding the forks down at the fork clamps. The links will run about $75 or less if you shop around.

The kickstand will probably have to be shortened a bit as well, depending on how much you lower the bike. You might be able to modify it with a little work.

The important thing is to make sure you lower the forks the same amount as the links and that they are lowered an exact equal amount to each other.

The Versys is a great bike, but it has a way diffferent engine. It has the same motor as the Ninja 650, the KLR has a big water cooled single and a carb, not a fuel injected twin.

If you dont need much, could you dish the seat some. There was one on/off road bike I was lookin at once that nearly fit me nicely, just a bit taller than I liked. Turns out, on that bike's seat, there was enough foam to dish it out two inches easily. Maybe the same could be done to this one, leaving the suspension (and handling) the same. Then all you have to do is find someone who can make up a seat cover for it, and your golden!

Dods has you covered. Its a common KLR mod, they are tall bikes and alot of people lower them.

Easy and cheap.....

Well, I will see how much they will haggle on the price. Unlike most used bikes this one still has a warranty, because the bike came back to the dealer so fast that they never activated the warranty with Kawasaki. The price is high according to the Blue Book, but that would not include the warranty or all the extras.

Whiehorse press has a lot of things for the KLR including lowering links. Good luck. Lowering might also effect the GVW capacity and make it lower also.
