Greeting from Fairbanks, AK

The snow has finally melted and I'm heading south for a 2 month meander around America in two weeks.

Welcome. It's funny that you live in Alaska and go to the lower 48, while most live here and plan trips to Alaska.

Make that trip to Alaska if you can. The trip thru Banff/Jasper and up the ALCAN is worth the trip alone, and then you get . . . Alaska. Never get tired of the ride.

Welcome from Texas. The wife and I took a vacation to the Kenai area about 3 years ago. It was a dream come true for me. We hope to go again one day. We were not on a motorcycle though. You live in beautiful territory. I'm jealous but not sure I'd be tough enough to handle the winters. Enjoy your trip and be safe.

You'd be surprised by the winters. Absolute temps are cold, but there is no wind. Most of the winter I wear a single layer polar fleece jacket and that's it. Minus 20 is not that bad when there is no wind.

You're right! While it can't compare to Alaska's interior, I say the same thing about living here in northern Wisconsin. I work (and recreate) outside a lot all year long, and I tell people all the time that zero degrees is nothing, as long as there is no wind. Even 20° with a wind, though, can chill you fast.

While in the military I got to visit Alaska a few times. I loved it, even in winter. I cannot wait to visit again.
