Attention - Password and Security Update

Hello all,

Over the next few days we will be implementing some changes to our forum password strength and password expiration policies. To make sure you continue having the best experience possible on the community, we regularly monitor the site and the Internet to keep everyone's account information safe. We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community. Just to be safe, we are implementing the following changes to improve security even further:

1) We are asking everyone to change their passwords (and will force a one time reset). Along with every user on the forum, new passwords will need to be more complex, and can't be simple words (sorry, you can't have "fluffy" as your password anymore!). Please use a password unique to this community. Reusing passwords can expose your account indirectly when other websites (Twitter, Linkedin, Badoo, etc) are compromised; and

2) Your passwords will expire on a 365 day basis. When you login on the 366th day, you will have to change it.

We'll also be sending out an email to users to let them know about the changes, in upcoming weeks.

Thanks all,

Helena

With all honesty, this is great news for member security. But, what about member features? I am by all means no master when it comes to VB but what about more member features? This site is years out of date and has no updated features and such as it shows with the latest version on this site and what is offered on VB.

I made my post, I will leave it as that.

Funny, worried about our security when spammers jump right in posting links on their first post.

Just leave it like it is, this is a forum and no matter what, you can't secure it, especially when all the Google pop-ups are allowed and used to make money.

Spammers making their own accounts and posting links is a different issue.

While a forum might not be 100% secure, we want to give our users a heads up to let them know that they need to be aware that they should not be using easy passwords or the same passwords for everything.

I like my password, I want to keep it because I only need to remember a few of them. It's only a forum, not a bank and no financial information should be here to worry about. My internet connection is far more secure than the forum is, not worth the expense to upgrade an old version forum that is working fine the way it is.

The other forums you have upgraded have lost active membership, that should be enough to tell you that it's not working. I'm one of them that has quit posting or even visiting them.

Yet the newest spammer is still posting away with links that aren't allowed until 15 posts!

I am not going to express an opinion, I suppose if I want to participate on the Forum I will have to comply..... But I must say....this does seem to have struck a Nerve and Conjured up some very strong feelings?!??
Interesting. Not quite sure what to make of all this.....
Am I missing something?? is there perhaps another reason for the new policy that simply hasnt been put out more succinctly or concise? Again, I mean no offense to anyone just speculating and wondering aloud I guess.

While you may not have any important info posted on this site, the basic info that could be taken if an account was compromised could put accounts on different sites at risk, ones that may have access to sensitive info. Having access to a username, IP address, and email isn't much, but if you have a simple password it's enough for that password to be broken. Adding the layer of complexity shuts this security risk down from our end.

And in addition, compromised accounts are often also used to vandalize sites. While these acts are usually easily repaired, they are a preventable headache.

I understand all this and I do support security. You are also right with your last post. As much as I would hate to update my password I understand the purpose behind it.

On another note, one member did post something about adding more features and upgrading may not be a good idea because of a loss of membership. I have to agree, that does happen in some cases. So I retract my thoughts on that idea. But, what if adding a new skin or something? Just something new giving members a choice what skin they want to use? Don't tell me its not possible because I know better.

The black skin is OK but what if someone edited the buttons, logo, and such to make it look better? Why have black with blue buttons?

Maybe adding a few skins would be nice. But it just my opinion.

Those are good suggestions. However, due to dealing with these password resets right now, we are unable to walk this one through. Would you be willing to put a pin in this and bringing it up again once we get everyone back on track?

Thanks,

Hey there,

There will be a mandatory password reset sent down. You can change it now through the zuser CP but you will need to update it again for the new requirements.

So, was the site hacked and I need to go change all of my duplicate passwords on non-critical sites?

So, new password they gave you, copy it and then go to the link they provided and paste it in the blank. It will then send you to another page to verify your EMail address. The 1st blank asks for the current password for you, again paste the one they gave you in there. Below that you will need to choose a new one that meets the requirements twice. Then click on save changes.

Hope this helps everyone.

I, for one, welcome our new Canadian overlords.

But suddenly requiring a 10 character password with upper case and lower case and numbers and symbols WILL result in the loss of at least half of your members.

Especially if it happens every year.

They may continue to lurk, but without posting.

Took me 2 tries but I got it. I don't see why we would lose a bunch of members. If you like the Forum and want to post you will do it. Besides, it's really not all that hard.

I've been thru changing many passwords in the last week. This one was easy. I had to call for help to get 2 of them changed.

Well they tried hard to kick me out. Took 3 times as every time I tried they thru the old password in. I guess going directly to change password wasn't how they saw someone going. But they kept that old password there confusing the heck out of me. Might have been better if they just asked everyone to change it and after a week if they didn't then force it. At least we got a site that's more secure than some personal computers. For whatever good that is.

Good plan.
I typed in a number 1, instead of a big I.
Then when I saw an X alongside all the requirements I thought they did not apply. I am used to a tick mark, not an X. When I typed the first letter I got the green tick, and finally that was my clew that they wanted all of the items listed.

While we're on this subject, I can't remember all of my passwords for all of the sites I have to use them on. So, I created a folder on my home computer titled Passwords and put it under Documents. I listed all of the sites with the passwords and saved them to that folder. When I have to change one, like this one I go in and change that particular one and save the changes.

Then, I email a copy of that to myself and don't delete it. That way, when I'm away from home and need to go to my insurance page or my bank page I have the passwords in my email and can pull them up on my phone.

I hope this helps someone. It's sure saved my butt when I had to make an urgent trip to my mom's and needed to pull up a copy of my insurance card. The trooper was fine with just looking at it on my phone. No ticket.

There are password managers that can be found for free. They securely keep a list of all your passwords and the password file can be kept on a thumb drive as a backup.

The one I use is here, but there are sure to be many other good ones as well.

No ticket.
Only problem with that strategy, MONI, is if someone hacks your computer. Now they have the Holy Grail at their fingertips if you have bank info, CC info, etc. stored there. Best bet is to transfer to a thumb drive and keep it on your keychain.

I use an address book and a pencil. In the event of a change I use a rubber ( eraser) to remove the old entry, then write in the new one.
