New York may institute speed cameras

Red light cameras are used in many communities, especially in larger cities. They have proven to be a good source of income for municipalities. New York lawmakers will soon decide if speed cameras are to be added to the arsenal of automated traffic controls.

At the center of the debate are 40 speed cameras that the state Senate will vote on putting into service by the end of this week. These would capture the speed of oncoming vehicles, along with photographs of any speed offenders.

Danny Rodriguez, a New York resident, doesn't have a problem with red light or stop sign cameras, but is leery of the new speed cameras. “Stop signs and red-lights, I agree with. A little bit over the speed limit? Everyone goes a little over the speed limit once in a while,” Rodriguez said.

Safety is the reported reason for the new camera systems, but some, like Danielle Beckforth, suspect that increased revenue is the real reason behind the push for these devices. “I think it’s embarrassing the city is trying different ways to milk the citizens of this country,” she said.

Robert Sinclair of the American Automobile Association (AAA) agrees that money is the real motive behind the cameras. Sinclair adds that it is impossible to defend yourself against tickets issued by the automated systems in court.

milk money from the citizens? how about don't speed...morons....

"everyone speeds a little" yeah, and it just as illegal then, even if everyone else does it......it's no wonder people don't follow traffic laws, there isn't much enforcement until it gets "too bad"...as in, it's ok to go 5 over the limit, but 10 will get you a ticket...well do should 5, it's called a limit for a reason....

same thing applies to turn signals, they are standard equipment, use them (this is not directed at anyone in particular, just in general)

I think we're going to start seeing stories on the news about people taking baseball bats and shotguns to all the cameras. It's just a matter of time before folks get fed up with being over-governed.

Speed cameras bring in a lot of money. In Holland, there's a gazillion of them, and as the process is fully automatic, with automatic license plate recognition and printing the ticket, it doesn't cost very much. I speed by 15mph, I get fined for $180.

But when my car gets hit from behind, and the other car just takes off, I write down the license plate number, then later police calls me to say they won't do anything about it. I understand that, it would cost them and it won't bring in money.

Yeah... GOOD LUCK with your "just dont speed morons" idea
You know you just insulted probably 9/10ths of the whole forum?
Who's more the moron, those who make minor infractions, but dont hide it, or those who self rightously slam others thinking their ***** dont stink.

with ONE work, you lost a LOT of respect from me. You could have gotten the same message across WITHOUT insulting everyone around you.

well Anime, I'm sorry I lost some of your respect...but if you also read the last line of my post...."This is not directed at anyone on the forum, just in general"

I am not being self righteous, or think my ***** don't stink.....I just wish that drivers everywhere would stop all the "small" infractions, because as time goes by the small infractions become normal, and so the infractions get a little bigger....and bigger...and bigger

in this State (Missouri) turn signals are to be used for turning or changing lanes....less than 1/2 the cars and/or bikes I see on the road use them for changing lanes.....

headlights are to be turned on if the windshield wipers are used, not for the drivers benefit, but so others can see the vehicle better.....it gets hard to see a silver or gray car when the spray off the tires is the same color

but cops don't enforce these laws often, so they become "little" infractions....and we all know what happens in time with little infractions....

Sorry... but I think that calling everyone a "moron" was rather uncalled for. If we all were doing around at 120, stunting our vehicles, and doing nothing but drag racing on the streets, then maybe that word might fit us.

Actually, "Moron" is one of the nicer things I've been called this week!

Goliath, when I ride my bike my first inclination is to keep my head and eyes up, and on a constant swivel for potential things that are going to kill me. As a result, I tend to not focus as much on speedometer, and I do not have cruise control.

As a result I tend to just comfortably keep up with the flow of traffic, and maintain the distance between myself and the car in front of me. I have a pretty good idea what the speed is based on feel and gear selection, but it's hardly an exact science. Every once in awhile I'll look at down at the speedo (and adjust speed if necessary). but man, I'd sure hate to get nabbed by some robot because my priority at the time was more about my surroundings than whether or not I was going 45 in a 40.

And that's what I see as the real problem...robots just point, click and mail you a ticket at a pre-determined "x" miles over the limit, a flesh and blood cop can make a judgement call about who really should or shouldn't get pulled over for speeding or driving recklessly.

    That makes a great argument.

squally, that's my point....trying to keep up with the flow of traffic....the problem is, a lot of people think that it's ok to run over the speed limit....no, not everyone, but enough.....I get honked at and yelled at all the time for "blocking" traffic by going the speed limit....

in fact just the other day I had a guy get all pissed at me, followed me to a parking lot and started yelling at me for slowing him down....he complained that I was "making him late" by riding so slow....my response was "if I made you so late, why are you stopped here yelling at me? Aren't you going to be even more late?" that kind of deflated him and he didn't know what else to say, so he took off up the road in a huff, and promptly got pulled over for speeding....I stayed in the parking lot long enough to watch the officer write him a ticket before leaving....

my offense, going 35 in a 35mph zone with him riding my rear fender for 6 blocks....I kind of think that if people are running that late, then maybe they should have left where ever they were at sooner...
