My wife just lost a very good friend from work. Riding near Big Bear Lake in California. Semi ran a red light, he didn't stand a chance. Happens so quickly... Be careful out there

Shirley's brother.

Shirley's brother Rob died last night. He got some form of Lou Gehrig's disease. He was in his fifties.
Rob and his wife Deb both rode. I think they had Victory bikes. Both bikes were sold a few years ago. The last major holiday they had, was with us to Cuba in February 014. We new the time was near, so we had plans to meet them next week in Canmore Alberta. The last year or so has been very tough on Deb. The end comes as a blessing in some respects. I found it tough to watch a tough kid struggle so much.

I just lost a friend last night. We met up at a Guardians of the Children fundraiser rally and poker run event. The President is a mutual friend / coworker of ours. We rode together in the same group in the Run, me making it a specific point to ride close to him, since he was really the only person in the run that I even knew. He even rode the bike he offered to sell me, when I was looking for one, a bit back ( 2008 or 10 Softail Heritage ). In fact, he won the run, and I took 2nd ( he had an Ace high flush, I had a Jack high flush ). Then it was off to the after-party rally.

Well, after many alcoholic drinks, and many insistences that he would stay with his girlfriend who only lived a block or so from the party, for reasons I'm not currently aware of, decided to ride on back to his own home, about 50 miles away.

He didn't make it home.

At some point along the way, he somehow swerved off the road, and hit an embankment, and was ejected from the bike ( bike's totaled ). This was estimated to have occurred at around 12:30 AM. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:05 AM.

Don't drink and ride, y'all. Please.

Thanks, y'all.

I do have more details, now, though.

From what I hear, he had been driven to his girlfriend's house 4 different times, and he kept walking back to the party, to get his bike, insisting that he was fine, and "just wants to ride".

Well, our mutual friend, the President, agreed to ride his bike over to the girlfriend's house, so it'd be there, when he wakes up in the morning. He and his daughter ( the one who kept driving him over to the girlfriend's house ) stayed with him for 30 minutes, trying to dissuade him from riding. Even went the extra mile of pulling the plug wires, thinking that in his drunken state, he wouldn't be able to figure out why it wouldn't start, and would get tired and just go to bed. Obviously, he wasn't that far gone, because within 10 minutes of them leaving the house, he had apparently figured it out, and took off on a ride, having been desperate to do so.

He made it about 22 miles, before he wrecked ( I mapped it out on Google Maps. I assume he was headed back to his own house, but we'll never really know.

Well, you can lead the horse to water....

A desperate man finds a way. It's just sad that there wasn't more we could've done.

I mean, had I still been at the party, maybe I could've taken his keys all the way back to my house ( more than 50 miles ), and just agreed to bring them back in the morning, or something like that. I dunno.

But, what happened, happened.

You can only go so far with a drunk. They'll get extremely angry and even violent if you push too hard. They ALWAYS know what they are doing. The only think that works is to stay with them and drink with them until they pass out. If you just make it an extra effort task they will figure things out. As was this case. Drunks are hard to deal with. How do I know? I could easily have been one and can be stubborn so I'm kinda talking from experience. You really have to get them to agee up front they won't drive/ride. Even then you have to remind them. But unless you put them in a locked room you cannot control them. That's the problem with trying to deal with them with laws. Just like criminals. It's against the law to rob. Just how well does that work. Same thing here.

Welp, another funeral in the works.

Same group of friends from the August incident ( Guardians of the Children ), went on a ride last Saturday ( I did too, but not with them ), and it didn't end well...

While exiting the interstate to head back to their clubhouse, one of the bikes hit a spot of gravel near the shoulder, and the rider lost control of the bike, and slid into another. They were both critically injured in the event, but the one who got struck passed away from his injuries, yesterday ( Monday ). He had suffered an injury that left him leaking cerebrospinal fluid out of the back of his head, so it wasn't going to be good, whatever the outcome. But he inevitably succumbed to the injury, and passed away.

As for the other guy, last I heard, he's still in critical condition, but I haven't heard anything since Sunday ( not trying to ask too many questions from people already suffering enough ). Only confirmation of the other's passing.

Yeah, it's kinda rough. Also, a stark reminder why I do not wear half-shells. I'm told a 3/4 would've saved him. In fact, the official police report says he wasn't wearing one at all, but everyone that was there says he was. Because it turns out that it came off as he tumbled and slid across the ground.

I feel most sorry for the other guy, who is probably going to feel guilty over it, for the rest of his life. Playing the blame game, and constantly thinking about what he could've done different.

I also feel really bad for that guy's daughter, who was riding on the back of that bike when it lost control and slid. She came out fine, though. Few bumps and bruises ( she was wearing full gear, including full face helmet ). But also, having seen that happen directly, and up-close, at 10 years old? Ouch...

Just a bad deal, all ways around.

Yeah, that's my biggest concern, as well.

As an update, though, the other guy is alive, and...uh...relatively well? He had surgery. 2 pins, broken ribs, broken shoulder blade, and dosed to the eyeballs on painkiller, but it seems he'll be ok.

At least we only have to dig one grave...

I would like to post in remembrance of a great mentor of mine. She had nothing to do with me getting into riding, but everything with getting me on my career path. She was an awesome hog lady. Everyone knew her purple and pink flamed Harley when it came through town with that little 5 foot nothing of a spit fire pegging it out (respectfully.) She gave me better advice to working for the Forest Service than anyone else has ever given me. Deborah Walker, you will be sorely missed. October, 2016.

RIP John Surtees

John Sertees was a remarkable racer. He was a four-time 500cc motorcycle World Champion, winning his first in 1956 at age 22.

He is the only man to win world championships in both MotoGP and Formula One. Heres a link to an article appearing in The Sun.
