HD Build Your Own

I'm putting together a Street Bob, over on the HD site.

When I want to add the Red Laced Rims, it requires an upgrade to the 103CI Engine ($350/black or $700/chrome).

Is there a reason for the upgrade that would make it mandatory? I can't see any reason for it.

I'm happy with the 96CI that it comes with unless there would be any advantage to the engine upgrade. Any thoughts?

I think it's just marketing.

They can sell a "package" with the larger engine and special rims. Auto makers often do the same thing such as having to buy aluminum wheels if you want the sunroof.

You may be able to buy the rims separately through the dealership, but they may cost more than the package price if you consider the labor to change them out. It's worth checking into, though.

Standard up-sell attempt from the boys in HD marketing. The black laced rims don't require the bigger engine.

If you're happy with the 96" discuss it with your dealer.

Get standard laced wheels and take them to an aftermarket shop to have them powder coated.

/\ /\ This.

And, have them done just a little differently so you aren't a clone of all the other HD's with the factory red wheels.

If you choose to purchase them from a dealer there are a number that will discount and usually ship free as long a the order is big enough. Check www.lshd1.com to start; they're usually 20% off. You save tax too which is nice

Check with the dealer. I wanted White walls on my last purchase, but they were not available from HD. The dealer bought my old tires from me and then sold me the new tires. Basically I paid the price of the labor to do the change.
